When attending any event, DO NOT EXPECT the Promoters to provide anything
and you will not be disappointed.
When attending a National event, there will not be many amenities provided
and what there will be, will have long lines, a long walk and possibly
shortages. Don’t waste your time searching. Use your time enjoying
the event.
Keep in mind the thought that you are unpaid entertainers. You
must not wear yourself out backstage where the audience won’t see you anyway.
You are there to create an illusion and instill in the public an interest
in our history.
Plan to stay at the event. Having a motel room will cause you
frustrations getting in and out of the event and will assure you that you
will miss something. Get a motel room on Sunday night somewhere at
least an hour from the event location to shower, enjoy a good meal and
regroup for the drive home.
Keep one set of dry clothes and shoes in your vehicle for each member.
Plan for walking time to the entertainment and arrive early for best
viewing and seating locations. Carry a rag rug or old quilt scrap
to sit on.
Carry identification at all times!!!! Let someone know your plans of
where you are going and how long.
Keep something identifiable on your tent, high up such as a flag, laundry,
colored ribbon etc.
Fire Extinguisher or buckets of water near camp fires and where everyone
will know where they are at.
2 way radios will let you listen to the promoters to hear for storms
or cancellations. If you use them for personal contact be sure to pick
a different channel. (extra batteries)
Pack one ice chest with jugs of frozen water. Cover with blankets
during the day. Dry ice can be purchased at some Wal-marts and will
last 5-7 days.
Cook and freeze a couple of meals ahead of time such as meat and noodles,
sloppy joes etc. You can put it in a plastic bag and set it in the
pan to freeze the same size. Then at the event you won’t be trying
to get a frozen square to fit a round pan.
Consider Porta-johns are for the public. Carry ice cream buckets
with lids as “honey pots”.
Box of trash bags for drop cloths, ponchos, luggage-liners, dirty clothes,
smoky pots and trash.
Hot events: Carry salt packets and available water. An
air-conditioner for night can be made from placing a battery operated fan
in front of a pan of ice and will drop the temperature in your tent.
Rinse off the salty layer on your skin and use powder.
Cold events: Line your cot with a trash bag. Wear a trash
bag poncho under your cloak. Put your feet and legs in a trash bag
when you go to bed (not for children). A Terra Cotta pot heater can
be made by placing a fat candle on the base and inverting the pot over
it. This will warm up a small tent.
Plan on enjoying the event and keep a check list on things you can
do with out or think you might need.
Take the time to thank the promoters for all their hard work putting
the event together.
